Panchakarma is the most wrongly interpreted term by public who assume that the word refers to variousMassages or dharas. But in reality massages are only preparatory procedures, while the main panchakarmaor the five bio-purificatory procedures include-
Abhyanga: Abhyanga or oil massage is done with specific ayurvedic oils to treat various problems of vata like low back pain, stroke, osteo arthritis and so on. Abhyanga also reduces stress and fatigue by relaxing the body and mind. It also increases blood circulation, enhances immune function, promotes good sleep, and nourishes the skin. It prevents premature aging.
Pinda sweda: It is a type of sudation therapy, where in a warm pottali of either leaves or powders or rice paste is used to massage the body according to the body’s condition. Pinda sweda gives relief from joint pains and inflammation, soothes nerves, relaxes muscles and assists in sound sleep.
Nadi sweda: This is a type of sudation where the person is made to sit in a steam box. This provides relief from inflammation, improves circulation, relaxes muscles, relives stiffness and heaviness of muscles and joints, and reduces pains.
Kati vasti: In this procedure, warm oil is retained in lower back. This soothens back pain and lower limbs, reduces/relieves stiffness, nourishes the nerves, enhances blood supply and improves body movements.
Greeva vasti: This procedure is similar to Kati vasti, but the oil is retained in neck region. Greeva vasti provides relief from neck and shoulder pains, lubricates joints of spine, improves flexibility, improves blood circulation, and soothens the nerves
Janu vasti: Similar to kati vasti, janu vasti is done on the knee joint. It reduces stiffness, pain and inflammation of the knee joint, improves joints' lubrication and flexibility, increases circulation, and strengthens the muscles locally.
Shirodhara: Shirodhara is a treatment in which oil/decoction/medicated buttermilk or milk is poured on the head in a streamline. Shirodhara is an excellent treatment that calms the body at both physically and mentally. The treatment balances hormones, promotes nervous health and overall well being.
