Stroke or paralysis is a common emergency condition which results in death or life long physical impairment. Stroke can occur either due to hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain) or ischemia (death of brain tissue due to impaired blood supply). In Ayurveda, stroke is described as Pakshaghata, ekangavata, ardita, and sarvangavata depending on the body parts affected. Pakshaghata is primarily occurs due to vatadosha in association with rakta, kapha or pitta doshas. The causes include an interplay of genetics and environmental factors. Some of the pre-disposing factors include- diabetes mellitus, hypertension, atherosclerosis, stress, dyslipidemia, coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation besides excess smoking and alcohol consumption.
